On a cold Friday night in November, 17-year-old Emily Eicheldinger arrives to Alumni Stadium, home of the Quakertown Panthers football team, wearing a gray pea coat, white silk scarf and dark blue jeans. Arriving a few minutes late, she makes her way towards the student section to enjoy the Friday night football game with her friends. When she walks up the bleacher steps, heads begin to turn and stare. As she reaches her seat, people notice her stylish coat. In the 1960s, pea coats were all the rage. Now, these warm jackets are making a return in fashion.
Coming in a variety of lengths, colors, style and materials, pea coats are becoming increasingly popular with both men and women.
With a slightly structural design, a typical pea coat has a collar and an over-lapping button closure. Usually, the coats are made of wool. Made originally for pilots, the jackets were designed for both cold weather and comfort.
The chic coats typically run anywhere from 75$ to 300$, depending upon the material of the coat and where it was purchased.
In the 1960s, the classy-looking coats were made popular by first-lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Since then, the jackets were often referred to as “Jackie O jackets.”
Today, stars like Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow, are wearing the warm coats as fashion statements. ![]() |
